Here’s what to keep your eye on. Another season of Golden State Warriors basketball is about to get underway. But before we get to the regular season, we first have to overreact to some preseason games. The Dubs have six preseason games this year, and the first takes place on Saturday in Honolulu, when the Warriors face off against the LA Clippers at 4:00 p.m. PT in a game televised locally on NBC Sports Bay Area and nationally on NBA TV.
There’s only so much that we can learn from one lone preseason contest. But there’s still a lot to keep an eye one. Here’s what to watch for on Saturday.
The starting lineup
For the second year in a row, Golden State’s starting five is a big topic heading into training camp. But while last year it centered on whether or not Hall of Fame-bound point guard Chris Paul would knock someone out of a proven-elite starting five, this year it’s a much more vague question. Steph Curry shared with reporters why he wanted to sign an extension with the Warriors before the season started. The Golden State Warriors were able to get ahead of some potential distractions by inking superstar guard Steph Curry to a one-year contract extension. Now under contract through the 2026-27 season, Curry is more clearly tied to the Dubs future. While Curry’s future with Golden State was never a hotly contested talking point, the Warriors inability to return to championship contention over the past two seasons set the stage for some uncomfortable conversations if that continued in 2024-25. During his first media availability of the season last week, Curry was asked about the decision to extend his contract.
“No secret it’s always has been and still is a goal of mine to be a Warrior for life, to stay competitive throughout that process, and I know it’s kind of unheard of,” Curry said. “You know we’ve got a short list of guys who have Collapse

RIP to the legend. Dikembe Mutumbo died today at 58 years because of brain cancer, and I never would have thought it would affect me like this.
My entire life as a basketball fan and player, I’ve always thought about his iconic shot blocking taunt, wagging his finger and going, “NO NO NO!” with an unmistakably deep, gravelly baritone.
Dikembe Mutombo’s journey in the NBA was defined by a towering presence that struck fear into opponents for nearly two decades. From the moment the Denver Nuggets selected him fourth overall in 1991, it was clear that Mutombo wasn’t your typical player. Standing at 7 feet 2 inches, his game revolved around stifling defense, and he quickly became one of the most feared shot blockers in the league.
His now-famous finger wag, which followed a rejection, served as a reminder of his dominance. Over 18 seasons, Mutombo earned four Defensive Player of the Year awards and was named an All-Star eight times, Collapse

Curry emphasized the need to ‘evolve.’ The hiring of Terry Stotts — former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers — signaled a potential change in how the Golden State Warriors approach their half-court offense.
Despite having Steph Curry on the team, the Warriors finished 10th in the league in offensive rating with garbage time eliminated from the equation, per Cleaning the Glass. They were also 10th in half-court offensive rating. Such marks technically placed them in the upper half of the league in terms of offensive efficiency, but having Curry — perhaps the greatest offensive talent the league has ever seen — meant those marks weren’t enough to justify his pedigree.
Having coached another sharpshooting guard in Damian Lillard, Stotts can bring a fresh perspective to the offense without necessarily stepping on toes and overhauling what has worked for the Warriors over the last decade. He will still emphasize the ball and player movement Collapse

In the Golden State Warriors’ case, the known quantities have been evergreen for nearly a decade — that is, in the case of franchise stalwarts Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Some have been around for quite a while, enough to command fan-favorite status: Gary Payton II, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody, to name a few.
But the dark side of the Warriors’ moon is highlighted by a few league veterans who’ve been past opponents and occasional tormentors — none of whom may be more intriguing than the sharpshooting Buddy Hield, who two seasons ago was second only to Klay Thompson in terms of three-point makes. Hield averages 7.6 three-point attempts in his eight years as a professional; extrapolating that number to per-75 possessions brings it up to 9.5 attempts.
